      Comics in Science

There are many aspects of comics that make them a promising tool for science communication. Comics can combine engaging storytelling with the structure of diagrams, they allow us to travel into distant worlds with fictional characters, and they map abstract concepts onto more familiar ones with metaphors. A more fundamental question, however, remains to be answered: Do comics actually improve learning or engagement with science? Some research results are encouraging and suggest that the true value of comics may be engaging those readers who are less likely to seek other forms of science communication. Yet, although they may be easy to read, making good comics takes as much time and skill as making a good documentary. At the end of the day, the communication of science in comics will be only as good as the comics themselves.

What is argued here about the use of comics for learning science?

      Impressions

Research by Christopher Olivola and Alexander Todorov suggests that rapid judgments about the personality traits of political candidates, based solely on their appearance, can predict their electoral success. In other words, voters rely heavily on appearances when choosing which candidate to elect. Since voters need to navigate their way through the flood of information available about candidates in order to make fully informed choices, it is no surprise that they take mental shortcuts to get to their final decision. Olivola and Todorov conclude: “Getting people to overcome the influence of first impressions will not be an easy task. The speed, automaticity, and implicit nature of appearance-based trait inferences make them particularly hard to correct. Moreover, often people don’t even recognize that they are forming judgments about others from their appearances.”

    • Indie Bookstores

For years, bookstores have been the repository of, along with books, a lot of highly romantic feelings. They crop up in fictional settings rather more often than their retail peers; the list of examples is long and charming, and includes the Shop Around the Corner (You’ve Got Mail), the Travel Book Co. (Notting Hill) and Women and Women First (Portlandia). Part of that appeal lies in the sense that bookstores, especially independent ones, belong to a bygone era – there’s a delicious moribund melancholy about them. Last chance to see.

Ironically, that reputation may have contributed to an unexpected plot twist – independent bookstores are actually really healthy. In May of 2016, the American Booksellers Association informed a grieving public that the year before, the number of its member stores had actually increased, from 1,712 to 1,775. Counting multiple locations, the total climbed to 2,311. You can’t even call it a fluke because that was the seventh straight year it happened.

The numbers are growing because business is growing. Independent-bookstore sales were up around 5% in the first four months of 2016. Indies accounted for about 10% of all books sold in 2015, up from 7% the year before. This isn’t a reflection of good news across the broader book business: the number of Barnes & Nobles stores has shrunk from 726 in 2009 to 640 in 2016, and sales at the chain have slipped every year since 2012. It’s also not true in the U.K., where the number of independent bookstores (sorry, bookshops) shrank 3% in 2015. But apparently Americans like indie bookstores, and they like buying things there.

The revival of the neighborhood bookstore has a few different causes. Some are prosaic: new technology makes things like accounting and inventory management easier for small stores. The growth of social media makes it easier to promote events. The demise of the Borders chain in 2011 had the effect, in some markets, of taking competitive pressure off indies.

But there are other, less tangible reasons, too. When Brian Lampkin followed his wife’s medical practice to Greensboro, N.C., he felt the lack of an indie bookstore downtown. “I just have this prejudice,” he says, “that every city needs a really good independent bookstore.” So he did something about it: he renovated a beautiful old brick building dating from 1898, and in 2013 he opened Scuppernong Books there; the bookstore is paired with a wine-and-coffee café in the same space. Scuppernong stocks a literary-leaning list. “We’re letting Amazon and Barnes & Noble take care of the best sellers,” Lampkin says. “Where are you going to get poetry? Some Barnes & Nobles you walk into, you’re lucky to find Emily Dickinson.” The store now has a staff of eight.

Businesses like Scuppernong are also benefiting from a surprise twist in the story of the e-book. After Amazon launched the Kindle in 2007, e-books began a relentless conquest of the book market, from 9% of unit sales in 2010 to 28% in 2013, at which point their eventual dominance began to feel like technological manifest destiny.

But the paper book – a piece of information technology that has, after all, been tested and honed over the past 2,000 years – has declined to give way that easily. In 2015, the share of e-books (at least the non-self-published kind) actually receded to 24%. The book market appears to have rebalanced itself into a complex mix of paper and digital, with neither format completely dominating, and plenty of room for brick-and-mortar retailers.

It’s becoming apparent that just as paper books turned out to have advantages over e-books, reality has its good points when compared with its virtual, two-dimensional shadow. Book-industry analysts talk a lot about “discovery,” by which they mean the way people find and purchase new books. It turns out, according to consumer research, that the best method for book discovery is still standing in a roomful of books and browsing – ahead even of click-tracking, data-mining if-you-liked-this-you’ll-like-that algorithms.

No question, indie bookstores face challenges. Theirs is not a huge growth business. No one’s getting rich. “The most surprising thing is how many times people just say thank you,” Brian Lampkin says. “I think they sort of get that there’s no real reason to do this other than love and commitment.”

Even as indies gain ground, online retailers are booming, too: their share of the book market was up 5% in 2015. Amazon opened a brick-and-mortar bookstore in Seattle the same year, announcing a second one, in San Diego.

      Food for Thought

As a dish is handed down the generations, passed between cultures, or shipped abroad, its recipe is reinscribed by all those who eat it. At first, the differences might seem small, but over time it can change out of all recognition. New ingredients are substituted for old, new methods of preparation are adopted and, every now and then, new names are bestowed. But while the accretion of such alterations may obscure the original, each new ‘layer’ tells us something about a different group of consumers: their tastes, their economy, their language and their relationship with those from whom they adopted the dish. This is particularly true of Anglo-Indian cuisine, where, of course, the most obvious examples are curry and mulligatawny soup.

What is the main argument in this text?

      Breaking Up

Few animals appear more affectionate than the black-browed albatross. These large seabirds, whose dark eyebrows shadow their eyes like mascara, are socially monogamous and often mate for life. Their romantic-seeming “marriages” have a practical purpose: staying with the same partner builds trust, which is essential as the pair alternates between lengthy foraging trips and egg-incubation duties. But “divorce” is not unheard of. As is the case with other monogamous animals, a female albatross will leave a partnership that lacks breeding success. The process is relatively understated and free from noisy squabbles, says University of Lisbon biologist Francesco Ventura. Often when a female deems the partnership unsuccessful over the course of a year, she will simply appear with a different male in the following breeding season.

What is implied here about black-browed albatross couples?

      18th Century Criminals

People in 18th century Britain used the term ‘criminal’ in much the same way we do today: someone who committed a crime and was taken to court was a ‘criminal’ and was referred to as such. It didn’t matter if they were a starving waif stealing an apple from a grocer’s stall for the first time; the branding didn’t distinguish them from a highwayman, murderer or career housebreaker. This wasn’t just a semantic quirk, it was generally held that anyone who would stoop to commit a crime was already morally bankrupt and was starting a spiral down into a life of villainy, if they weren’t already there.

Which of the following statements best reflects public opinion on crime in 18th century Britain?
